I have a few things to say today.
November 5, 2008
The first is that I want to ask you all to pray for a hurting family that I know in Humboldt County, my other home. We attended a small woodsy church there, full of the sweetest people. The pastor and his wife lost their son yesterday to a freak sinus infection that moved into his brain stem. I've never heard of such a thing, and now it has made a deep groove on all of their lives.
He was only eighteen, a friend of ours too, and I remember him singing his heart out to Jesus. He was a kind, kind person. Pray for his family, his mother, his twin brother, and his special friend. They are all hurting and it must be so hard.
The second thing: Happy New President Day! We are very happy with the outcome of the election. Don't be fooled by our far off house; we've watched every debate and election news has replaced most of the other input to this house in this village in India. (I was reflecting, the other day, on how I was already an expat even before I came to India. I'm an expatpat.)
It is historical and wonderful that a man with the same racial makeup as my children is holding the highest office in the country. I am hopeful for change.
And the third thing is that Chinua and I have been working on a special project that I am very excited to show you.
It's a calendar and we really made it together; we both took the photos, he formatted it and I wrote the text.
The photos show a little of why we love to travel. I think it's a beautiful calendar and our hearts are in it; I love the idea that you can have a little bit of our lives in your own house, as well as a little bit of California, India, Israel, Burkina Faso, and Turkey.
I'll stick it in the sidebar soon, but for now, you can see it here.

Ya Obama! I was at the rally in Grant Park last night and looked into his eyes while he was giving his acceptance speech. It was the most hopeful experience I have had.
We are very happy. And very thankful that we were lucky enough to be there with the other million Obama people.
Your pastors will be in our thoughts and prayers. That must be such a hard thing for the community down there.
Your calendar looks amazing! I had no idea you went to Burkina Faso. My cousin who is with Wycliffe went there...she used to call it "Bikini Fatso." That always stuck with me!
the death and rebirth in your blog got me by surprise,
the death of a child, no matter how old, how young, no matter what the circumstances, is one of the hardest things in life to understand as god's will, I pray a little prayer for you and them all today, my heart goes out to the family and i can not imagine what they must be going through Thank goodness for god's love, kind friends and community to help us through times like these, and to come to some peace and honor the life that lived.
We were all enthrawled in Victoria last night to watch the speach and hear the great news, It is wonderful and I will be watching closely to see if Canada can make a come back with some good influence ( you may not recall but we have elected a minority conservative government again-it's like kicking ourselves in the foot again) A change is a comin and it;s long overdue, Yay for the world to have Barak Obama and his family in the white house in January!
ps great calander, i'd like to buy one soon :)
wow
i can't believe you are excited about Obama.
Who cares that he is multi-racial, when he supports FOCA? change we don't need, for sure.
The story about your pastor is heartbreaking and plays on my very worst fears, my children sick or hurt, just the thought, keeps me up at night.
Can't wait to see pics of your lovely new home.
Please know that I will hold your friends in my heart...
[...] a totally different note my friend journeymama and her husband have made a calendar with their photos and it is available to buy. I am incredibly [...]
The best thing about Obama's winning?
Alex calling me and sincerely saying,
'THis is the first time I have ever felt pride about being young and part of this generation, I am so much more hopeful about the future now'
That was the part that made me weepy.
Oh Sara, I would never support someone based on their race.
We looked at all the issues, and based on everything we were excited about Obama because his policies lined up with our values on MOST things. Not everything. I also heard him address the issue of late term abortion in the final debate and his answer relieved me.
Chin and I almost never talked about race during the campaign. It was only after, when we realized what a historic thing it was, that both of us got a little emotional about it and were so glad for that aspect of progress. Forty-four years ago, African-Americans couldn't even vote. Today a black man is President Elect. Pretty cool.
Rae, which family? I hadn't heard. I'm so sad. This will be the 10th year since the sudden goodbye to my own dear 18 year old sister. Love you heaps.
