I so love the before and after of things.
Before the writing conference: Terrified of scary authors and other writers.
After: Friends with other fiction writers.
Friends with other fiction writers!
When I drove away from the dry forests to come back to the ocean, my heart was so full. I was glowing, vibrating with happiness. I loved reading the work of the other participants everyday, I loved talking about it and learning from what people said. I loved hearing author's read their work and talk about their processes.
The staff at the Community of Writers at Squaw Valley are some of the kindest people I've met, and I felt like I learned just as much about being a kind and generous person as I did about writing. I would like to emulate their way of including everyone in the room.
Plus, the time alone wasn't so bad either. I'm always glad to get to the point where I miss my kids, and I have to come racing back to them a day earlier than I planned.
Of course I always miss Chinua. It goes without saying, but I'll say it anyways: he really is a Superstar Husband.
Sara J. Henry has an excellent post on the Squaw Valley Writer's Conference for anyone intending to go. You can find it here.

I hear you on the getting away long enough to miss the kids thing. How refreshing!!
HAPPY HOMECOMING
I never saw that movie yet...but you remind me of "Eat Pray Love"
Incredible. I was going to comment that I am currently reading Eat Pray Love and I see that Frank has had my same thought which makes me connect Liz to you, although she doesn't have those four jewels to run back to (at least I think, as I haven't finished the book yet!)
it's nice to have you back...I'm not sure I like sharing you!!
You travelled the world with 3 children while pregnant with the 4th, then you gave birth in Goa, then you moved to the Himalayas, and returned to Goa. You dealt with lack of water, extreme weather conditions, the Indian hospital system, language and culture barriers and living away from your parents and siblings. All that time you not only nourished your own family but also a community, you kept your religious faith and connection to your spouse, and you actually wrote a book, while describing everything I just mentioned, in writing, here on your blog.
But you were terrified of the other writers?!!!
That's funny :-)
I just discovered your blog, and I'm glad I did - my partner and I are about to embark on a working tour in the Global South, and I'll be pregnant on the road in some pretty rural locales. I'm excited, and your own musings are both inspiring and reassuring. Thank you!
